How to Install a Glock 20 Slide Back Plate Fast

The Glock 20 is a big-bore 10mm workhorse — the kind of pistol Texas hunters, backcountry carriers, and duty guys trust when the stakes are real. Factory, it ships with a plain plastic back plate. Swap it for a custom laser-engraved plate and you turn that smallest part on the slide into a statement piece. No gunsmith, no press, no permanent modification — just a few minutes on a clean bench.

What you'll need

A punch, a small flat-head screwdriver, or even the rim of a spent 10mm case will get the job done. No drilling, no Dremel, nothing permanent — the factory back plate rides off on a groove and your new one rides right back on. This procedure covers the Glock 20 across Gen3, Gen4, and Gen5 — the slide back plate footprint hasn't changed.

Step 1 — Clear the pistol first

Remove the magazine and lock the slide to the rear. Look into the chamber and confirm it's empty with your finger, not just your eyes. No magazine in the gun, no round in the chamber. This is a 10mm — treat it with the same respect you'd give any loaded firearm. Do not skip this step.

Step 2 — Field strip the slide

With the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, pull the trigger to drop the striker, retract the slide slightly, and press down on both slide-lock tabs. Guide the slide forward off the frame rails and set the frame off to the side.

Step 3 — Remove the factory back plate

Flip the slide over so the rear is facing up. You'll see the factory plate holding the spring-loaded spacer sleeve in place behind the striker assembly. Press the sleeve inward with your punch or screwdriver, keep a thumb over the plate to control the striker spring, and slide the factory plate downward off the rails. Take your time — that sleeve is under real spring pressure and it will move fast if you let it.

Step 4 — Install your 214 plate

Set your new custom laser-engraved back plate into the same rails, press the spacer sleeve in again, and slide the plate upward until it locks over the sleeve and seats flush against the slide. There should be zero play — if it rocks or rattles, it's not seated.

Step 5 — Reassemble and function check

Return the slide to the frame, rack it several times to confirm smooth cycling, and run a dry-fire function check pointed in a safe direction. Flush plate, clean rack, positive reset — you're back in business, engraved plate and all.
